How do you put on a new grip for a Tennis Racket?

Well, i purchased a new grip for my tennis racket because the grip that i have now on my tennis racket is deteriorating. And my question is, are you suppose to take the older grip off and then put a new grip or can you put the new grip over the older one?

i would recommend removing the old grip
then putting on new grip (not overgrip)

Is it bad to put a regular grip rather than an over grip on a tennis racket without removing the old grip?

This should explain it for you:

The wrapping process is the same for replacement grips and overgrips. If you have a replacement grip, you’ll take off the current one, if you have an overgrip, leave the old one on. The difference between the two is pretty obvious. Replacement grips are usually a little more expensive. They also are thicker and usually have adhesive on the back so they don’t slide on the bare handle.
